THE ART AND CULTURE : Sutra House and Gallery

Sutra Dance Theatre was established in 1983 by Ramli Ibrahim to explore, promote awareness and develop traditional and contemporary performing arts in Malaysia through the creation of strong original works.

Over the years, Sutra has staged productions that have received national and international acclaim for their excellent and innovative theatre presentations, thus gaining an impressive track record of artistic achievement.

Sutra House is one of the most vibrant non-governmental Art centres in Malaysia. With its dance studio, art gallery, library, a 200-seat amphitheatre (Amphi-Sutra) and an open-door policy to artistic endeavours, Sutra House is a nerve centre for interdisciplinary collaborations and discussions. These have resulted in a flow of self-expression and creativity.

With the sun, moon and stars as its props and luxuriant foliage as its backdrop, Amphi-Sutra with a seating capacity of 200, provides a sylvan setting that transports the audience to mythic times, and then brings them to present day with as much ease. Natural and simple, Amphi-Sutra has staged performances ranging from Indian classical dances to Celtic music, Japanese shakuhachi and contemporary dances.

Sutra Gallery houses a collection of art works, especially related to dance, and also serves as a platform for visual artists who are able to interact with dancers in a unique residency program culminating in the exhibition of their works.

The gallery is open to the public on Mondays to Fridays, from 11am to 5pm, with weekend viewings by appointment only. All works displayed are for sale unless otherwise specified.
